Dover High School Ag Mechanics Classes Complete Special Project

Recently, the Dover High School Ag Mechanics classes completed a special project that will benefit wildlife in the Michaux State Forest in Adams County.  The class members constructed steel gates that can be used to close state forests roads during the turkey nesting season, in the spring.  Limiting vehicle access during this critical time helps to prevent unnecessary turkey nest disturbances.  The gate project was funded by the Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation.

Dover students in Mr. Weaner’s Ag Mechanics classes worked during the winter, turning lengths of pipe and bars of steel into five sets of gate posts and gates.  Metal fabrication skills such as cutting, welding, grinding, and machining were used during the construction process.  Projects such as this are a “win-win” situation for everyone involved.  The students got some real life experiences in metal fabrication, at no cost to the school district.  The Wild Turkey Federation was able to stretch their wildlife habitat fund raising dollars, and the Michaux Forest will be able to protect nesting turkeys at a greatly reduced price.

Earlier this year, students in the Ag Mechanics program completed some other wildlife habitat projects for the Pennsylvania Game Commission.  They built 10 barn owl nesting boxes and 4 bat houses.  Habitat boxes like these are used by the Game Commission to provide for two of Pennsylvania’s species of concern.  Dover agricultural students have a long history of public service/educational projects such as these.

Students who helped with Ag Mechanics Gate Project are Alysha Sweitzer, Jacob Fitzkee, Jered Fitzkee, Weston Hoffman, Mason Myers, Billy Hoover, Nate Stauffer, Nate Sennett, Gabe Mellott, Josh Guyer, Nicolas Barrett, Travis Crone, Brady Gross, Kevin Heider, Jordyn May, Konnor Bair, Jacob Miller, Bryce Neiman, Alexis Stine, and Colin Chamberlain.
